Prescribing Medical Cannabis

In Australia, where cannabis medications are largely yet to be formally approved, physicians must navigate the Special Access Scheme (SAS) administered by the TGA to prescribe these treatments. The two primary SAS pathways leveraged for this purpose are:

  1. SAS Category B, which is the standard route taken, and
  2. Authorised Prescriber status, which may be suitable for those with experience in SAS B submissions and are ready to prescribe more routinely.

Contrary to what some may assume, the procedure to request permission to prescribe medical cannabis for patients has been made more straightforward. The TGA has optimized their Online Portal to facilitate a more efficient process, including the concurrent submission of applications to the TGA and, if necessary, State Health departments.
